Biegun to visit Russia to discuss situation in Belarus
US First Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun is to visit Russia and Lithuania to discuss the situation in Belarus, sources say.
The exact dates of the visit have not been specified, but, according to the insider, Biegun will fly to Moscow in the coming days, and then head to Vilnius, where the candidate from the Belarusian opposition Sviatlana Tikhanauvskaya is currently staying, Reuters reports.
I assume that the administration (USA - NEWS.ru) is trying to dissuade Moscow from intervening alone or using its influence on Lukashenko to induce him to more brutal repression, the agency quotes its source.
Protest actions in Minsk and other Belarusian cities began on August 9, after the presidential election. According to the CEC, the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko won more than 80% of the vote, while his nearest rival, Sviatlana Tikhanauvskaya, got about 10%.
NEWS.ru reported earlier that Lukashenko had accused the United States of orchestrating riots in Belarus.
